Five Top Tips For Exploring A New City By Yourself

By Jet Candy

Have you ever been daunted by the thought of exploring a new city by yourself, and are not sure where to start or what to see? Worry not, as Jet Candy brings you our top tips!

1. Attend an arts venue

Visit an exhibition or art gallery – and get some inspiration for your own creative projects! The best thing about attending an exhibition on your own is that you get to enjoy it at your own pace – and the experience is therefore more personal.

2. Visit a museum

There are a number of museums in every city, and you are likely to find plenty of options, no matter what your budget is. Look up what museums the city has before you arrive, and see what exhibitions they have on (some of which will be free to visit). The opportunities for expanding your knowledge are endless!

3. Indulge in some retail therapy

When you go shopping alone, it allows you time to browse, try things on and really take your time, without worrying about anyone else’s agenda. It might also make you look at items that you’d normally disregard as not really being for you. One of the best things about solo shopping is that you don’t need anyone else’s opinion – so if you feel good in a new item of clothing, or you really like a new piece of furniture, then that’s all you need to know to purchase it!

4. Go to a green space

Weather permitting, put on a comfy pair of shoes and enjoy a long, leisurely walk, enjoying the tranquillity of the natural world. Apart from the good exercise, the other obvious benefit is that it’s free! It’s also a good choice if you’re feeling anxious about the prospect of being on your own somewhere new – because everyone, whether they’re out jogging or just walking the dog, will be absorbed in their own activities. After your walk, find a nice spot to sit – maybe on a park bench or just under a tree – and either pull out that good book you’ve been meaning to read for ages, or just watch the world go by.

5. Take time outside

Go to a local garden centre or farmer’s market and really take the time to notice the seasons pushing ahead, in the budding blooms or the seasonal vegetables. Take something away from your visit that you can either cook for dinner, or make into something special. For example, why not buy oranges and make some marmalade, with a few springs of fresh rosemary. Make the choice to do things differently, your way.
